It is almost the end of the long winding journey in the life as a master student. Having said that, doesnt mean that I am already a wise man with great knowldege and understanding of what I have learnt.
Everyone started that long winding road, and ended at the same point at the same time. What has made that journey different is what we have earned and lost along the way.
I thought I had finally reached the destination the other day.
But alas, I took for granted, picking up my pace, and tripped and fell in humiliation.
I stood up with mud on my face. I lurched towards the destination and did not even want to clean the mud off my face. Be a clown for a while-- what's the big deal.
"You" out there. I may be just a sparrow.
But you, a phoenix, is it any better than just a legend ?

a sparrow is a sparrow. a phoenix is therefore a phoenix. how can la a sparrow be a phoenix ? a chicken - never be a peacock ? you sot sot dee issit ? how is your presentation ?
a prof who didnt even know what i was talking about gave a rather nasty comment.
not that i have said anything wrong !?
humiliating ! all my 2 yrs hard works were spoilt by that comment. I took for granted after all. Learnt a hard lesson. Paid a high price. never want to repeat.
stand up and march again. :)
Sometimes you gotta stand up for yourself. You are a student but tht does not mean you don't deserve respect. They think tht they can push you about because you are a lowly student but once you stand up for yourself, they will think twice. Same thing happened to my friend but she decided she won't take crap from no one! MAde things a little harder but she would never be ashamed of herself.
Sharing the same experiences with you Eddie and going through this journey towards getting the prestigious Masters degree from the No.2 University in Japan was not an easy task. It had its ups and its downs. Hard work for sure specially as we moved closer to the goal. What it matters is what you learn on the way, not the 13 minutes of (ridiculous if you ask me) presentation with 7 minutes (if possible) left for questions and comments!!! And if you got a comment that felt humiliating (which it was, I don't blame you), I think you will feel better and forgive if you consider the situation and place when that took place. You are at the final master thesis presentations. It's been a long day, since morning all the professors were judging the presentations of the students, had to comments and ask questions. Some of the presentations were good, some interesting and some plainly boring. Nearly all of the presenations were in Japanese. At the end of the day comes a presentation in english. That professor, as the one in charge of the session he feels that he has to do a comment. His choice of English was just not right. He sounded really insulting but I don't think he really meant what he said. I know the professor and he is really a very nice person, I was very surprised to hear such a comment, I'm sure it was slip of the tongue.
Whatever it was said though, I think you went too far to "boycott" the ceremony where the results were announced. They called your name and you were not there. You made your associate professor look bad, since he was organizing the whole thing. After the ceremony they were looking for you and they asked me if I know your whereabouts. Well it was your choice but I think you went a little too far there. Knowing you for the last 3 year you can be a little touchy sometimes. Honestly I felt you were insulted and I understand your anger but you end hurting the wrong people with your final action there. Just my opinion. Congratulations, you made it to the end!!! You conquer, that farking cubic polynomial that stressed you for several months. You are a Masters now. Put it behind you, there are 3 more year to fight more fierce wars!!! Keep it up!
thank you for all the advice. I admitted that I had caused so much troubles to people around me, especially my Prof and Associate. Such a high price to pay for holding up my pride.
Intentionally or unintentinally, I was deeply humiliated.
As Ai Ling said, DEFEND, or get bullied.
Hey! Comment moderation was enabled here? Dictatorship!
Congratulations, Eddie. You survived not only three years in Japan, but also to that infamous nasty comment at the end of your presentation. Next time, just do as a Japanese did to one professor I know. After a "strange" question and the corresponding answer, he politely asked the professor, "I'm sorry, professor, I'd like to ask you a question, how many hours did you spend reading my thesis?"
Take that, sensei!
;-)
See ya!
sorry to hear about your experience. i have yet to go through my presentation this coming friday. i m the final student presenting and will be doing it in english. wish me luck! plus, sometimes i think that japanese people don't really know how to select the correct english word to you when asking questions and giving comments. I myself have experienced that a couple of times and was indeed not a pleasant experience. finally, congratulations. I think we should all meet up before I leave... :)
